BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) ? One group in Brunswick County is taking a pro-active approach to control the county's animal population.? Organizers from the Adopt an Angel program are currently building a new spay and neuter clinic in Winnabow.
Last year, the Brunswick County animal shelter had one of the highest kill rates in the state.? Nearly 80% of the cats and dogs admitted were euthanized.? Sherry Gloer with the Adopt an Angel program said the animals are being put down because the animal shelter is overcrowded.
The new program will provide services to people who seek affordable spayed and neuter services.
Organizers have already received a $200,000 donation from the Miss Avis Davis fund.? That donation was used to pay for the building and renovation plans, but there's still a lot of work to do.? Organizers are applying for another grant from Petsmart to pay for equipment.
Gloer says the new clinic will be a better way to control the animal population.
"Our objective is to work with other communities to be pro-active instead of reactive for these animals," said Gloer.? "We want to work smarter not harder.? An ounce of prevention does go a long way."
Organizers hope to open the clinic by June, but Gloer says that won't happen unless they get more support from the community.
