Going Green Can Save Homeowners Money - 8 News NOW

LAS VEGAS - Your home improvement projects could save you money. Going green can dramatically reduce your energy costs, and new rebates are available to make your home environmentally friendly.

Insulation is one addition that can save you money. Attics usually reach 150 degrees in the summer. Good insulation can drop that temperature to approximately 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the house - keeping the house cooler all summer and reducing air conditioning use.

A problem that people have with green technology is that they don't want to pay for it up front. There are plenty of ways you can start going green with little cash.

Leaving lights on in a room that's not in use can increase costs. Additionally, if you find leaks around your home where hot air is coming through the garage or windows, that's an energy loser.

It's not all about saving money. Sealing those leaks prevents dust from getting inside the home ? creating a healthier living space for the homeowner.

"In addition to the energy use, you can tell how quiet it is," said Nevada ENERGY STAR Green Alliance President Annette Bubak about a model green home. "This is a corner home - the location, and normally, if you were to open up that door, you would hear traffic go by all day long. But because we did the insulation the way that we did, it's very quiet, very comfortable."

State-of-the-art, high-end green equipment and upgrades can cost approximately $25,000. The Nevada ENERGY STAR Partners Green Alliance says it's getting easier to find rebates and incentive programs. A person can save approximately 25 percent by searching state incentives. NV Energy and Southwest Gas also offer rebates.

For all more tips on creating a green home, the Green Alliance is hosting an information meeting Wednesday, March 13 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors building at 1750 E. Sahara Avenue. The cost is $30.
