Suspect kills Alabama police officer, wounds another (Reuters)

MOBILE, Alabama (Reuters) ? An assailant stabbed a Mobile police officer to death Friday afternoon outside Mobile County Metro Jail before fleeing in a police cruiser.

The incident began outside the jail at around 3:50 p.m. when the suspect identified as Lawrence Wallace Jr., 24, stabbed the officer before fleeing in the squad car, Lori Myles, spokeswoman for the Mobile County Sheriff's Office, said.

Mobile police apprehended Wallace shortly after 6 p.m. following an armed standoff at a Cedar Crescent Drive home, police said. Wallace's condition at the time of his apprehension was not immediately clear.

A second officer was shot and injured in the incident and has been transported to University of South Alabama Medical Center, although his condition was unknown.

Police spokeswoman Ashley Rains confirmed the shooting, but neither officer has been identified. Mayor Sam Jones' office confirmed the death of the stabbed officer.

Court records indicate Wallace was arrested for first-degree robbery in 2007, but the charge was dropped. He was arrested again on April 5, 2011, and charged with possession of a controlled substance and second-degree possession of marijuana.

Mobile Police Chief Michael T. Williams appeared briefly at the site of the standoff on Cedar Crescent Drive. He declined to comment until after meeting with families of the victims at the hospital and said a statement would be issued later in the evening.
