Inventories boost economic growth, but trend weak

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy grew faster than initially thought in the third quarter as restocking by businesses provided a big boost, but consumer and business spending were revised lower in a sobering reminder of the recovery's underlying weakness.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 2.7 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Thursday, as export growth also helped to offset the weakest consumer spending and first drop in business investment in more than a year.

While the growth pace was much quicker than the 2 percent rate the government estimated last month and the best since the fourth quarter of 2011, it was hardly a sign of strength as the lift from inventories will likely be lost in the fourth quarter.

The economy is also bracing for deep cuts in government spending and tax increases early next year, known as the fiscal cliff, which could suck $600 billion from the economy and fuel a fresh recession.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected GDP growth to be raised to a 2.8 percent pace.

"The bulk of the (GDP) rise is inventory adjustment," said Omer Esiner, chief market analyst at Commonwealth Foreign Exchange in Washington. "So I think the market may look past this number, thinking real GDP in the economy is a bit lower. It was also concerning to see consumer spending revised down."

A separate report from the Labor Department showed initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 23,000 to a seasonally adjusted 393,000, but still staying elevated after superstorm Sandy.

The storm, which ripped through the East Coast in late October, has distorted initial claims data in recent weeks, making it hard to get a clear pulse of the labor market, whose struggles have underscored the economy's weakness.

U.S. stock index futures held gains after the data. Prices on longer-dated U.S. Treasury debt pared losses, while the euro held against the dollar.

INVENTORIES ADD, NOT SUBTRACT

Business inventories added 0.77 percentage point to third-quarter GDP growth. They were previously estimated to have subtracted 0.12 percentage point.

Excluding inventories, GDP rose at a revised 1.9 percent rate, underscoring sluggish demand. Final sales of goods and services produced in the United States had been previously estimated to have increased at a 2.1 percent pace.

A smaller trade deficit was also a factor behind the upward revision to GDP as export growth outpaced a rise in imports. But the trend in exports is unlikely to be sustained given slowing global demand, especially in China and debt troubled Europe.

Trade contributed 0.14 percentage point to GDP growth instead of subtracting 0.18 percentage point, as previously reported.

Other details of the report were rather weak. Consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, was lowered to a 1.4 percent growth rate - the slowest since the second quarter of 2011, from the 2 percent gain previously reported.

Consumer spending increased at a 1.5 percent rate in the second-quarter.

Business spending was revised to show much deeper cutbacks, which have been blamed on the fears a tightening in fiscal policy next year. Business investment fell at a revised 2.2 percent rate instead of a 1.3 percent decline. That was the first drop since the first quarter of 2011.

Part of the drag in business investment, which had been a source of strength for the economy, came from equipment and software, where spending was the weakest since the second quarter of 2009.

The report also showed that after-tax corporate profits rose at a 3.3 percent rate in the third quarter after gaining 2.2 percent in the second quarter.

Spending on nonresidential structures contracted after five straight quarters of growth. Government investment was revised to a 3.5 percent growth rate from 3.7 percent as defense, and state and local government spending estimates were pared.

Growth in home building was trimmed to a 14.2 percent rate from 14.4 percent. Residential construction is benefiting from the Federal Reserve's ultra accommodative monetary policy stance, which has driven mortgage rates to record lows.

US EPA suspends oil giant BP from new federal contracts over conduct tied to oil spill

Mitt Romney can take some solace in his devastating loss on Nov. 6: at least he won the voters who really count. That's the thesis anyway of top adviser Stuart Stevens, who penned an op-ed in the Washington Post on Wednesday arguing that by winning wealthier and whiter voters, Romney secured the moral victory over Obama. "On Nov. 6, Mitt Romney carried the majority of every economic group except those with less than $50,000 a year in household income," Stevens wrote. "That means he carried the majority of middle-class voters. ...

3 Calif men indicted in terror plot case

(AP) ? Three California men have been indicted on terrorism-related charges for allegedly plotting to kill Americans overseas.

An indictment filed Wednesday charges Ralph Deleon, Miguel Alejandro Santana Vidriales and Arifeen David Gojali with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists. If convicted, they each could face up to 15 years in prison.

The three men were arrested earlier this month. Federal authorities say they planned to board a plane headed for Istanbul and eventually make their way to Afghanistan. Authorities allege the men were to meet up with a ringleader, 34-year-old American Sohiel Omar Kabir, who also is facing terrorism-related charges.

In a 77-page affidavit, which includes references to the group's online video conversations and audio recordings, federal officials say the men planned attacks on military bases overseas.

Google pays $400 million for wireless internet provider ICOA (correction: no it didn't)

Google made another grab for its internet infrastructure, this time picking up wireless hotspot company ICOA for the sum of $400 million. From the deal, the internet giant will control around 1,500 wired and wireless broadband locales in "high-traffic" public spaces, including airports, restaurants and universities, spread across 45 US states. Google will presumably be running these public WiFi spots in addition to its current deal with Boingo -- and in addition to those 180 fiberhoods.

Correction: Looks like reports of the acquisition were greatly exaggerated as AllThingsD is reporting, and we've been able to independently confirm that Google has not bought ICOA.

Tips for Boosting Small Business Productivity with Technology ...

ZDnet has a good piece on how small businesses can use IT to boost productivity. ?They list 5 tips on how SMBs can leverage IT to increase the productivity of their workforces. We happen to love the first two points, as they are parts of the OfficeDrop solution that our business owners are really embracing:

  • Digitized Workflow ? we agree that having important tasks done digitally, vs the traditional (slow) paper method provides a major boost to small business productivity
  • Mobile Access ? as we?ve blogged before, small businesses are leading mobile IT adoption, mainly because they are seeing that their employees are much more productive on the go when they have quick and secure mobile access to important files.

Check out the ZDnet video below on how small business is using technology to become more productive:

Interested in using technology to make your SMB better? One of the most compelling features of OfficeDrop?s cloud storage solution is our file search engine. For many of our clients, full text file search has become the?most important tool in their company?s organizational/retreival toolbox.?Anything that they need they can simply type into a search box and they?ll not only be shown the list of files matching the query, they?ll also get thumbnail previews of the files that will let their employee pick the correct one right away. Previews matter a lot when dealing with scans, because scanners don?t always pick names that make sense; many of scanned files are named funny strings of numbers based on the date that the item was scanned.?With OfficeDrop, PDFs & scans are made fully text searchable, and files with text like Word documents, PPT?s and more are also full text searchable. So it?s easy to find words, numbers, phrases within my files. OfficeDrop?s web file search engine is currently our leading edge file search interface. I can easily add in search modifers like ?searching for files modified ?yesterday? or ?3 months ago to today,? by file type like ?pdf? or type ?audio.? It?s pretty amazing what can happen you can do cloud search on all of your files.

Director Kappos's Speech on Software Patents, the PTO, and ...

By Jason Rantanen

Last week, Director of the USPTO David Kappos delivered a keynote address to the Center for American Progress that focused on software patents and the smartphone "patent wars."? The speech is noteworthy for the Director's strong defense of software patents. The entire speech is worth reading - here are a few excerpts to induce you to read the full speech:

Software patents, like all patents, are a form of innovation currency. They are also ecosystem enablers, and job creators. The innovation protected by software patents is highly integrated with hardware. All of it must remain eligible for protection. The current software patent ?war? is hardly the first patent war?and unlikely to be the last in our nation?s patent history. Whenever breakthrough technologies come onto the scene, market players find themselves joined in the marketplace by new entrants. The first instinct of the breakthrough innovators is to bring patents into play. This is not only understandable, it is appropriate. Those who invest in breakthrough innovation have a right to expect others to respect their resultant IP. However, in the end, as history has shown time and time again, the players ultimately end up agreeing to pro-consumer solutions via licenses, cross-licenses or joint development agreements allowing core technologies to be shared.

***

So does that mean we?re done? End of speech? Should we just accept the problems, given the importance of the innovation and the illogic of discriminating against great technology that happens to be implemented in software? Of course not. The right point of inquiry is quality. By getting that right, we grant patents only for great algorithmic ideas worthy of protection, and not for everything else. This administration and its innovation agency understand that low-quality patents do no good for anyone. Low quality patents lead to disputes, uncertainty, and lost opportunity. Quality is central to our mission. All of this especially for software.

So we?ve been working on the underlying drivers for software patent quality from the beginning. Knowing that you get what you measure, starting in the summer of 2009 we assembled a taskforce to devise a comprehensive new set of quality metrics. That work culminated in 2010, when we rolled out the most complete, broad, objective patent quality measurement system on the planet ? seven metrics, which we report eagerly to the public. The Lexus of quality metrics. And what do those metrics show? Patent quality isn?t broken at all. In fact, our decisions on both allowances and rejections correctly comply with all laws and regulations over 96 percent of the time.

***

You know, the history of software patents is not a perfect one, although things are improving. Some of the most troublesome patents have expired; others can be challenged with new post-grant proceedings; and newer patents are quantifiably clearer, and aligned with current legal standards. But it?s important to note that, during the so-called smartphone patent wars, innovation continues at breakneck pace. A system like ours, in which innovation is happening faster than consumers can keep up, cannot fairly be characterized as ?broken?. Nor can it be said that the U.S. is just a receiver of all this innovation. Most of the innovation is taking place right here. Broken? What?

The fact is, the explosion of innovation?and follow-on litigation?that we see across consumer electronics hardware and software is a direct reflection of how our patent system wires us for innovation. It's both natural and reasonable that in a fast-growing, competitive market, innovators would seek to protect their breakthroughs using our patent system.

The full version of Director Kappos's speech is available here: http://www.uspto.gov/news/speeches/2012/kappos_CAP.jsp

Making the most out of remote working | Armstrong Communications ...

It does not surprise us at Armstrong Communications that so many businesses choose to employ staff who work remotely, as there are so many benefits to doing so. Sometimes remote working is absolutely essential for the job ? such as for travelling salesmen and engineers ? but often a company makes a choice to create cross-branch teams or put a project in the hands of a homeworker, because there is very little stopping them from doing so anymore.

Some of the advantages of working with others from a remote location is that it reduces the cost of office space and travel, and allows the very best staff across the country ? or even internationally ? to collaborate on projects, rather than being limited by the geographical distribution of talent.

The technology available to achieve an ideal working environment for remote workers has been around for years, and comes on in leaps and bounds all the time. In fact, there is very little now that a remote worker cannot do that an office-bound employee can.

Take the ShoreTel Communicator for example. Let?s say you have five top-notch employee located in disparate locations and you want to bring their talents together to work on a brand new project. With the use of the ShoreTel Communicator, these workers do not have to leave their desk to speak with each other and share files live. The technology allows for video conferencing, instant messaging, phone calls and VoIP, and file sharing from a whole host of different devices, so colleagues can speak face to face and refer to the same document, even if they are hundreds of miles apart.

So what if your colleague is not at their desk today? No problem. A quick instant message or invite to a video conference can be sent directly to their mobile and you can have a video chat and share files just as easily as if they were sitting by a computer.

The team behind the ShoreTel Communicator have worked hard to break down all the boundaries stopping remote employees from being able to effectively communicate with each other. But now that teams can collaborate as if they were in the same room, so employers and their staff gain all the benefits of working remotely without the cons.

With technological improvements, increasing requests for flexible working as people?s family lives change, and ? for many companies ? a global workforce, remote working is the future and we believe the demand for solutions like the ShoreTel Communicator is just going to grow and grow. In fact, with our years of expertise as a ShoreTel reseller, engineering service and support provider, we are seeing a rise in the number of people coming to us to get ahead of the game now and give themselves an edge over their competitors.

An exciting new world of work is upon us ? one that would have seemed unachievable 20 years ago. We are just excited to be part of such a fast moving industry and cannot wait to see what comes next.

A favorite junk store and a favorite day | Sierra Foothill Garden

My Favorite Junk Store and Why I Like It

I?m itchin? to go to the junk stores again. Boy do I miss the ?ARC Store? (Assoc of Retarded Citizens) in Fullerton, CA, near where I used to live. They?d bring new things in by the box-full EVERY DAY from the greater Los Angeles area and it was right around the corner from me. PLUS, they had colored price tags and each day two colors would be half price! I?d go every week, browse and cherry-pick.

***

Two styles
When we bought property here in the Central California mountains in 2000, I stopped collecting tropical fish. I lost interest in buying anything at all in the way of decoration for my beach-y themed small city house 20 miles from the ocean. I now desired a mountainy, ranch-y style house in the woods.

Our Fullerton home

Our mountain home

Our mountain home, same couch and coffee table,?casual camp style

In 2005, my husband and I finally moved to the seven acres of land in the Sierra Foothills of California we had found, located just below Yosemite National Park. This began a new adventure for us and as a couple of city kids, we sure got an education about country life.

House Framing

House Framing

We never dreamed we?d be building our own house,?or at least designing it, tiling floors for it and painting it. As a lifelong gardener, I was excited about gardening in this new location. The surroundings are wild and scenic, with a tall massive mountain rising high above the sloped property which is filled with scrub oaks, manzanita and Ponderosa pines.

Our empty new house, just starting out.

Our empty new house, just starting out, ready to be filled with family antiques and thrift shop and even trash day finds

***

After five years of preparation, we finally were ready to move into a freshly painted and nearly empty house. We had left so much behind, not needing or wanting our old furniture and city things. What I kept? I kept my Grandma?s furniture, a desk, a dresser and a gate-legged table. We had all her many oil paintings, some for every room. I kept Dad?s old office desk and the ash furniture he built for his first new house, a bookcase and the three drawer dresser? he built for us babies. We kept our old comfy couch and loveseat, a nice neutral tan, and an old rattan chair I found in an alley on trash day. I covered the cushions with a serape blanket and there it is in the above photo.? Everything we kept has a story,?a family story.

My List
Since I had shifted my focus to mountain living, I slowly developed a mental list of items and materials, I?d look for at the annual flea market in our county and at junk shops and yard sales. Here?s the list:

Indian blankets found second hand.

Weathered wood
Denim
Leather
Suede
?Plaid shirt? plaid

Summer camp
?40s kitchen
Rusted metal
Barbed wire
Oil cloth
Yosemite slate (Black, brown and gold)
Wildflowers
Graniteware
California-colored pottery

Terracotta clay
Vintage flower pots are an obsession Wrought iron
Granite rock
Pine trees and cones

Copper
Wool Indian blankets
Rope
Galvanized metal
Bronze
Night sky

These were the materials and things I?d search out so I didn?t get everything! I can be a bit of a crow, gathering shiny objects in its nest.

I?d find things, each with a feeling of exhilaration, sometimes with a look over my shoulder to check f someone else was reaching for what I had snatched up! I carefully put all these things away in boxes and bags and into storage until we were ready to move.

My Best Day
One day that December, I sat on the bare patio and unwrapped all my mountain themed treasures. I had forgotten so many of the items that I had found over the five years and opened and lifted out each one, humming.
It was like Christmas for me,?a favorite day.

***

Now, when I return to Fullerton to visit family, I head over to spend an hour or so in my favorite shop from back then. It?s not the same, because back then I had a direction, a goal to acquire what would go into our home and lives.? Now when I go, I rearely find anything I need?it?s just nice to putter and browse. Thank goodness now?I have a feeling that I have enough?.for inside!? Oh, you forgot about the seven acres, huh?

During the early phase of marriage, most people want to see the good in their spouse. Overall, I think this is a good strategy. However, it is also important and healthy to be able to trust your gut when you feel there is a problem in your relationship and address it with your spouse.

Trusting your gut involves some basic skills, so let?s look at four tips that may help improve the chances of your marriage thriving.

1. Awareness of your body sensations ? What is your gut telling you?

This involves paying attention to your heartbeat rate, pain in your heart, tightness in your chest, weight on your shoulders, intestinal distress and other sensations as indicators to pay attention to your feelings.

For example, early in my marriage, I overlooked my gut feelings. I did not have words for them. My husband would talk a lot, tell stories and generally be entertaining. This is a great quality about him; anyone would say he is a great story teller. At the time, I saw his story telling as a positive since I was relieved from my responsibility to communicate, due to my shyness and insecurity. I actually pushed my body sensations aside and did not pay attention to them.

It worked for me at the time. However over time, my body sensations began to emerge as tightness in my throat, pressure in my chest and pain in my heart. I knew then there was something wrong. I then had to find words for the bodily sensations I felt. I developed a deep resentment towards him and didn?t know why.

2. Vocabulary to identify subtle feelings.

Once you have identified your bodily sensation, you can begin to identify the feeling associated with it. Most people will identify with feelings of sad, mad or glad. But there are deeper feelings which fuel these basic catagories of feelings. Some of these deeper feelings can be fear of rejection, fear of loneliness or fear of abandonment.

I had to learn to accept my sad and mad feelings. Then after digging deeper, I found that I felt cast aside, rejected and abandoned by my husband when he told his stories. He would be the center of attention and I would be in a pity party with myself.

3. Courage to communicate your feelings to your partner.

Talking about deep feelings is a courageous act. When we risk exposing ourselves in a deep way we risk being hurt by the other person. Ultimately we have to decide if it is worth the risk of being exposed and connected fully and authentically with another person. Hiding parts of who we are out of fear leaves us disconnected and not really known.

Once I identified my deep feelings, I had to take responsibility for myself and be more assertive. I needed to communicate and share who I was with my husband and with other people. I knew that if I wanted to be known by him I had to be willing to work through any reaction he might display. I had to have courage to risk his disapproval or rejection if he reacted to my deep feelings. Actually, by the time I did share my feelings with him, I was determined to be known regardless the cost.

4. Problem solving skills to address the situation with your partner for a win-win outcome.

Sometimes when you change a behavior in a relationship it is confusing to your partner. Through couples counseling you can learn new ways of relating to each other that work better for both of you. Helping your partner to thrive will improve your satisfaction in the relationship.

My husband and I learned to resolve differences with help. I learned to take care of my social needs and he learned to allow space for others to tell their stories too. My husband?s determination to find a win-win solution helped us grow closer together.

Always remember relationships are messy ? there is no way around that fact. Negotiating the intimate details of our lives is risky. Every person has gut feelings. Working through these feelings is what makes for a healthy marriage or couple-ship.

Animals Are Literally Being Dissolved Alive Because of Acid in the Ocean

The next time you're having a bit of a bad day, consider this: in a part of the Southern Ocean, sea snails are literally dissolving day by day, thanks to the increasingly high amounts of man-made acidification. Being a little late to that meeting beats being dissolved alive, eh? More »

(AP) ? Kenjon Barner ran for 198 yards and two touchdowns despite leaving the game for a time with an injury and No. 5 Oregon defeated No. 16 Oregon State 48-24 in the Civil War on Saturday, keeping alive the Ducks' hopes for a spot in the Pac-12 title game and even an outside chance at the national championship.

De'Anthony Thomas, who helped picked up the slack while Barner was on the sidelines, ran for 122 yards and three scores for the Ducks (11-1, 8-1).

After Oregon's undefeated season was thwarted by a 17-14 overtime loss to Stanford last weekend, the Ducks had to wait for UCLA's game against the Cardinal later Saturday to see who would be headed to the conference championship game. Both Oregon and Stanford started the day with one conference loss in the league's northern division.

It was Oregon's fifth straight victory in the 116-game rivalry series with the Beavers.

While the Civil War is normally the season finale for both teams, Oregon State (8-3, 6-3) will host Nicholls State next Saturday in a matchup that was supposed to open the season but was put off when Hurricane Isaac bore down on the Colonels' Thibodaux, La., campus.

The Beavers will have to wait to find out where they're headed for a bowl game, but already their season can be counted a success after they went just 3-9 last year.

Barner appeared to hurt either his abdomen or ribs late in the first half and headed to the locker room. He returned after the break, but much of the work went to Thomas until he returned on a scoring drive that made it 41-17 early in the fourth quarter.

Oregon redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota threw for 140 yards and a score, and also ran for 85 yards and a touchdown.

His Oregon State counterpart, Sean Mannion, threw for 311 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted four times. Storm Woods rushed for 70 yards and two scores.

Mannion started the first four games of the season, throwing seven touchdowns and averaging 339 yards, but injured his left knee and required surgery. Vaz, who hadn't started since high school, took over and helped the Beavers to win in the next two games, and later became the team's starter.

But Vaz sprained his left ankle in the final moments of a loss to Stanford two weeks ago, and sat out last Saturday during Oregon State's 64-14 victory at home over California. Mannion got the nod for the Civil War.

A 47,249 fans attended the game, setting Reser Stadium record.

Oregon put the Stanford loss behind them by striking quickly on their first possession with Mariota's 42-yard keeper. The touchdown drive took just 1:46, but the Ducks' 2-point try to cap it off failed.

The Beavers took a 7-6 lead on Woods' 7-yard touchdown run, but the Ducks answered on the next series with Thomas' 2-yard TD dash. Barner added a 1-yard scoring run before he was hurt.

Stanford held Barner to 66 yards the week before, but he had 141 yards before halftime against the Beavers. With his first 15 yards rushing Saturday, he moved past Derek Loville (1986-89) for second on Oregon's career rushing list.

Trevor Romaine kicked a 36-yard field goal to narrow it to 20-10 at halftime and the Beavers pulled closer with Woods' 2-yard scoring run on their first series of the second half.

It was all Ducks the rest of the way. Thomas scored on a 6-yard run to extend Oregon's lead to 27-17, before the Ducks capitalized on a Beaver fumble that led to Thomas' 29-yard touchdown run. Barner returned with his 1-yard run and Mariota found B.J. Kelley with a 2-yeard scoring pass.

Mannion hit Micah Hatfield with a 6-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds left for the final margin.

The Ducks hold a 60-46-10 advantage in the Civil War which dates back to 1894 and is the seventh-most contested rivalry in the nation.

It was the fourth time that both teams were ranked for the Civil War. The last was in 2009, when Oregon was No. 7 and Oregon State was No. 13. That game was dubbed the "War of the Roses" because the winner was guaranteed a Rose Bowl berth. Oregon won 37-33.

Restaurant settles over 'carcass removal' listing

(AP) ? A phone book company has settled a lawsuit over its placement of a Montana restaurant in the "Animal Carcass Removal" section of its yellow pages, a listing the restaurant owner says cost him customers and made him the butt of a Jay Leno joke.

The terms of the Nov. 16 deal between Dex Media Inc. and Big Sky Beverage Inc., the parent company of Bar 3 Bar-B-Q, were not disclosed. A tentative agreement proposed in September said a deal would include a payment to the restaurant owner.

Restaurant owner Hunter Lacey sued Dex after the listing appeared in the 2009 phone book and was reprinted in other print and online directories in 2010 and last year. It gained national notoriety after Leno featured it as a joke on the Tonight Show in January 2011.

Lacey's lawsuit claims a Dex salesman deliberately published the free listing under the "Animal Carcass Removal" section after he refused to buy an advertisement in the phone book. The salesman no longer works for the company.

Lacey claimed the negative publicity caused business to drop off at his Bozeman and Belgrade restaurants and his brand's reputation to suffer. His lawsuit alleged negligence, defamation and slander, among other charges.

Dex has said it was an erroneous listing the company removed from its online directory when it was discovered.

The case seemed to be headed for court after it was filed in U.S. District Court in September 2011. But settlement talks began in earnest after U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Strong denied a request to dismiss the case because of problems he saw with Dex's disclosure of company documents to Big Sky Beverage's attorney.

Strong took issue with the timing of Dex's release of audio recordings of the salesman's calls to Bar 3 Bar-B-Q and a company document without giving the other side adequate time to inspect them in preparation for questioning the salesman.

Attorneys for both sides told the judge less than two months later they had reached a tentative settlement, which was finalized this month.

Neither Lacey nor attorneys for Dex and Big Sky Beverage returned calls and emails seeking comment this week.

Darwin's theory of evolution or the Big Bang: which applies to cloud ...

How many times have you heard others saying that cloud computing is a new technology revolution? Perhaps you have entered into a debate of deciding whether cloud is an evolution of existing technologies or not. Well, like many of you I often see people argue on this topic. Cloud, the disruptive technology that we know today, is the outcome of technological advancements over many years. Over time it has matured to become a powerful tool and an enabler of business success through its attributes in today?s competitive market. In this blog, I would like to discuss how cloud has evolved over time. Following discussion is a modified blog version of my original discussion and ideas presented in my book chapter ?Cloud Computing Terms, Definitions, and Taxonomy.?

Let me first start with a statement made by Maria Spinola which I believe will support my discussion here.

?Cloud Computing is not a technology revolution, but rather a process and business evolution on how we use those technologies that enables Cloud Computing as it exists today: SaaS, inexpensive storage, REST, AJAX, SOA(service-oriented architectures), On Demand Computing, Grid Computing, Utility computing, virtualization, etc.?

Advancements in computing systems, hardware, Internet and communication technologies, smarter software system and ongoing innovations have changed the IT landscape. It has radically improved the way how we interact with each other and we perform businesses. These advancements have bolstered cloud computing. Cloud is the culmination of grid computing, utility computing, unified communication (UC), Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Web 2.0 and many other similar technologies. Recently IBM Institute of Business Values, in conjunction with Economist Intelligence Unit, performed a survey on cloud computing. This study finds that mobile revolution, social media explosion, hyper digitization and analytics are the major trends driving business change these days. These trends will act as catalyst for cloud adoption and a decisive factor for setting direction and usage of cloud computing now and in future.

Now let?s look into the history of cloud computing. It has been unanimously agreed that the idea of cloud computing dates back to 1961 when Professor John McCarthy publicly suggested that computer time-sharing technology might lead to a platform in future when computing power and even applications could be offered or sold as public utility (similar to electricity or water).?Although idea of time sharing became popular in 1960s, there has been a fall of popularity later due to lack of software, hardware and networking technologies to enable this computing model. This idea did not see its wide adoption then.

Now fast forward to 2000. Since the advent of the new millennium we have seen proliferation of technology advancement in networking, software and hardware and as such reincarnation of this old concept. Many research papers tout cloud computing as the reincarnation of the time-sharing systems of 1960s and network and grid computing of the 1990s.

A very interesting discussion on the evolution of cloud computing was covered in an academic research paper entitled ?Cloud Computing: New Wine or Just a New Bottle?? This paper has defined six phases of computing paradigm shifts over the last 50 years which had led us to cloud computing. Phase one goes back to the early days of mainframes. In this phase many people shared powerful mainframes by dummy terminal. IBM was the pioneer in offering mainframe services through time sharing in the 1960s. Phase two has seen the rise of personal computers (PCs). There was a shift from mainframe to PC. PCs were smaller but powerful enough to serve some customers? needs. In phase three, people started to connect their computer within local area network to share resources. In phase four, these local networks were interconnected to create a global network. This heralded the birth of Internet. In this phase users utilized this Internet to access remote application and resources. Internet became a commodity for business success. Any tech-savvy person will know about this dot-com bubble. In phase five, we have seen the birth of grid computing, predecessor of cloud computing. Computer power and storage were shared though distributed computing. Phase six introduced cloud computing to us, tapping on the technological advancements over the last 50 years. ?As per the definition of cloud computing by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), it is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

Well, while discussing the six phases above, I did not mention about client server model from the 1990s. This technology did not gain momentum due to design issues and absence of scalability and flexibility features. However, cloud computing was able to display and inherit good attributes taken from all previous generations (See Darwin?s Theory of Evolution) and address new challenges not supported in earlier technologies. We can see how cloud computing has gradually evolved to the form it is now in today. It is still evolving to address business challenges and keep up with evolutionary changes emerged from social and market trends, service oriented architecture, Web 2.0, exponential growth in connected devices, collaboration and social networking. Cloud is definitely not formed in one day by a ?Big Bang.?

Irving Wladawsky-Berger, Chairman Emeritus, IBM Academy of Technology and a visiting Lecturer at MIT, has compared evolution around cloud computing to the Cambrian explosion which happened more than 500 million years ago, in an Economist article entitled ?Let it rise.? During this period, rate of evolution sped up due to cell perfection and standardization among other reasons. Thus evolution to more complex organisms took place. A similar analogy can also be made to the evolution of cloud computing. With the maturity, development and advancements of technologies over the last 50 years, the building blocks to make a complex IT system have been standardized.? These technologies coupled with the drive to increase IT efficiency are acting as a catalyst for the evolution of cloud computing.

In conclusion, cloud computing is a revolutionary style of computing emerging from evolutionary changes. It is the ?old wine in a new bottle.? Cloud is not formed out of a ?Big Bang? but it is definitely creating a digital ?Big Bang.? This digital ?Big Bang? is fundamentally transforming every industry sector we can think of and leaving a profound impact on our life.

Celebrity kitchens that make you want to cook

1 day

They sing, they act and some of them even cook. While many celebrities are usually spotted dining out or confess to having private chefs, a small number of them say they love to play chef.

But who would blame them when their cooking space features high-end appliances, a deep farmhouse sink and extended counter space? We?re taking a tour through some gorgeous kitchens owned by celebs who actually use them.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel
Who?s the cook in Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel?s relationship?

The newlyweds actually share the kitchen duties, Timberlake told Jay Leno recently.

?She likes to cook. I like to bake ? so dinner and dessert,? Timberlake said.

Perhaps the two share duties in his modern Manhattan penthouse. The sleek and minimal space has deep counter space and stainless steel appliances.

Emma Stone
For Emma Stone, cooking is both therapy and passion. She confessed recently that baking was one way she could manage her anxiety growing up. Stone?s boyfriend, actor Andrew Garfield,?told Vanity Fair that the actress is also serious about some day opening a bakery of her own.

Might as well get some practice in! Her galley-style kitchen in her new Beverly Hills home has white tiled countertops, stainless steel appliances and a large sink with built-in drainboard.

Emma Stone bought her home in May 2012.

Gwyneth Paltrow
In between acting and raising a family with Coldplay rocker Chris Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow runs the website goop.com, which is devoted to healthy living. The actress also recently published a cookbook entitled ?My Father?s Daughter.?

The amateur chef likely needs a large space for preparing her meals, which is why her new?home in Los Angeles is perfect. The spacious and modern kitchen has high-end appliances and?a large island perfect for meal prep.

Paltrow?s kitchen would be a great setting for her next cookbook.

Matthew McConaughey
Texas-born actor?Matthew McConaughey?has long professed his love for Texas-style barbecue, stopping by Guy Fieri?s food show as well as sharing recipes with?Rachael Ray.

Even now as he prepares for a role requiring a strict diet, McConaughey told US Weekly he?s been preparing a lot of rib-eye steak for his wife, Camila Alves.

The couple share a home in Austin with their two children. Not only does McConaughey?s home include a large kitchen, but it also has a back patio with great barbecuing space.

McConaughey?s Austin home has great indoor and outdoor cooking spaces.

Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has confessed that she loves to bake with her friends Selena Gomez and Emma Stone. She has plenty of kitchens spread across her homes in Nashville, and most recently Cape Cod, but we can imagine her spending time playing chef in her Beverly Hills home.

Her new California kitchen is a charming light-filled space with butcher block countertops and plenty of cabinet space.

Swift?s cheery cooking space is perfect for the singer.
